A Brief History of the MINI Cooper

1961: The MINI Cooper Is Introduced

The MINI Cooper launched in 1961, two years after the original MINI model first hit the streets. It was named after British car manufacturer John Cooper and designed as a performance-oriented alternative to the standard model. With a race-tuned 997 cc engine (compared to the 848 cc engine of its predecessor), it immediately made an impression to British racing enthusiasts and lasted for ten years.

1990: The Return

While the MINI Cooper was discontinued in 1971, it came back in 1990 with adjustments to make it more suited for the road. While its fuel-injected 1,275 cc engine still had plenty of power, this model also featured tweaks designed to improve emissions output.

2000: Under BMW

In 2000, the BMW Group bought MINI, maintaining it as a separate marque. The first MINI Cooper model under new ownership was the 2001 model, which featured a 1.6-liter Tritec engine and twin exhausts.

2025: The Latest Features

The 2025 MINI Cooper honors the model’s history with its impressive features. That includes a 2.0-liter twin-turbo engine that generates 201 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. It can achieve a top speed of 150 MPH – showing how racing is still in this machine’s blood.
