MINI Service Tips: Choosing the Right Fuel

October 5th, 2021 by

One thing is for certain; when you buy a vehicle, you have to be prepared for spending some time at the gas station. Of course, with a new vehicle, you may be wondering which type of fuel is best for your new car. Our MINI service technicians at MINI of Wesley Chapel have some tips to help you decide.

Different Types of Fuel

While there are lots of fuel variations, there are three main types to choose from:

  • Gasoline: This is the most common type of fuel as it is made from petroleum. It’s available in three different ratings—regular (87 octane), mid-grade (89-90 octane), and premium (91-94 octane).
  • Diesel fuel: This type of fuel is also made from petroleum, but with a different method. Vehicles that use diesel fuel (typically large or industrial trucks) are usually more efficient.
  • Bio-diesel: This is a type of diesel that is made from vegetable oils or animal fats.

Which Fuel Should I Use?

Typically, the first decision drivers make is if they want regular or diesel fuel. You also want to consider if you want premium or regular fuel. Premium gasoline has higher octane levels which can improve performance, so it is typically used in vehicles with turbo engines. It’s best to consult your owner’s manual to see which type of fuel is best for your car or SUV.

What Happens If I Use the Wrong Type?

You can cause serious damage to your vehicle if you use the wrong type of fuel. A diesel engine will not be able to combust traditional gasoline, and a gas engine can’t combust diesel fuel either. Therefore, your car won’t be able to start if you use the wrong type of fuel. It may even result in serious (and costly) damage to your engine.
