MINI Service Tips: How to Jump-Start Your Car Battery

Open the Hoods of Both Vehicles and Locate the Battery

In order to jump-start a car, a secondary or booster vehicle is necessary. Both vehicles should be facing each other or parked side-to-side for the jumper cables to reach the batteries of both vehicles. Open the hoods of both cars and locate the battery. For your safety, we recommend wearing safety glasses and gloves when jump-starting your car.

Connect the Jumper Cables

After locating the battery, find your jumper cables. You should have two: one red and one black jumper cable.  First, you will attach a red clamp to the dead battery’s positive terminal, then attach the red clamp from the other end of the cable to the booster car’s positive battery terminal.

Then, connect one end of the black jumper cable to the negative battery terminal of the booster battery. Lastly, attach the other end of the black clamp to an unpainted metal part of the engine, such as a bolt or bracket, of the car with the dead battery.

Ensure that booster cables are connected properly and are not near moving engine parts. Then, start the booster car. It may take a couple of minutes to charge the dead car’s battery. After a few minutes, start the car with the dead battery.
